What Are MCR Insoles?
MCR stands for micro cellular rubber — a soft, closed-cell rubber foam used in medical and orthopaedic footwear. MCR foam insoles replace the thin factory liner inside your shoe with a layer that gives under load instead of pushing back, which is what makes them the standard recommendation for feet that cannot tolerate pressure.
An MCR inner sole works by deforming around the shape of your foot. Where a hard footbed concentrates weight on the heel and the ball of the foot, MCR spreads that same weight across the entire contact area, so no single point takes the full load. - If our insole is larger, mark along the old liner and cut the excess from the front portion only — never trim the heel or the arch.
- Use our Smoothing Tool to give the cut area a clean finish and smooth any edges.
- Slide the trimmed MCR insoles into your shoe, wear them for two to three hours on day one and build up from there. Most feet settle into a new moulded MCR insole within seven to ten days. If you have diabetes or reduced sensation, check your feet for redness each evening during that first week.

Can I trim these MCR shoe insoles to fit my shoe?
Yes, and most people need to. Lay your old liner on top of the new insole, mark along it, and cut the excess from the toe end only — never the heel or the arch, since that is where the support sits. Cut in small passes and test the fit inside the shoe as you go. MCR is denser than EVA, so use sharp scissors and take your time, then finish the edge with our Smoothing Tool.
Is this a removable MCR insole, or is it fixed in place?
Fully removable. There is no adhesive — this is a removable MCR footbed that drops in over the shoe floor once the original liner is out. You can move the same pair between your office shoes and your walking shoes, and take them out to air overnight.
Which shoes do MCR insoles work best in?
Broad, lace-up shoes give the best result: formal lace-ups, walking shoes, school shoes, most sneakers and orthotic-friendly footwear. MCR is slightly thicker than our EVA pair, so if your shoe is already tight inside, the EVA is the better fit. Very narrow slip-ons and heels are the one place any orthotic insert struggles.
Will MCR insoles help with knee, hip or lower back pain?
Often, yes — indirectly. Poor foot alignment feeds upward, and the knees, hips and lower back end up absorbing what the foot fails to. Cushioning heel strike and spreading pressure reduces that stress. If the pain is severe or long-standing, get it properly assessed rather than relying on insoles alone.
How long does a pair last, and how do I clean them?
Six to twelve months for most people, closer to six if you are on your feet all day. Wipe the MCR foam shoe sole with mild soap and water and air-dry it away from direct heat or sunlight. Never machine-wash them and never dry them on a heater — both destroy the cell structure that does the cushioning. Replace them when the foam stops springing back under the heel or your old pain quietly returns.
